5 Ultimate Tips to Select the Best Water Purifier

Before shopping online, we all read reviews about the product and pick the right product that suits our needs.

Unlike Smartphones, Water Purifiers can not be reviewed since we can’t keep all Brand water purifiers at our home and review them.

Most of us purchase low-cost water purifiers and later regret that decision. So, In this post, I am going to point down a few tips so you can choose the right water purifier.

1. Types of Water Purifiers

Water purification technologies are getting advanced every day and we have various kinds of water purifiers in the market like Gravity Based Water Purifiers, Reverse Osmosis, Ultraviolet, Ultrapurifiaction and RO + UV water purifiers.

Gravity Based Water Purifiers

These purifiers are the most budget-friendly water purifiers on the list, with prices ranging from ₹1000 to ₹5000. Gravity-based water purifiers do not require electricity to operate, and you can install this type of water purifier in your home only when you get soft water and the TDS levels in the water is low.

Please note that the Gravity Based Water Purifiers are not as effective as RO and UV Water Purifiers. Always choose a Gravity Based Water purifier that is based on Ultrafiltration (UF) technology. Please note that Gravity Based water filters are better than boiled water.

Reverse Osmosis (RO) Water Purifiers

If you are living in a place where the water contains high TDS levels, you can install a Reverse Osmosis based water purifier. RO purification process can remove Heavy Metals, Pesticides, Arsenic, fluoride, Cadmium, and other toxic dissolved salts present in the water.

Electricity is required to operate an RO Water purifier. Conventional RO Water purifiers will remove natural minerals along with toxic dissolved salts. So, Make sure you buy an RO water purifier that comes with a TDS controller which retains Natural minerals in the Drinking water.

Ultraviolet (UV) water purifiers

The Concept of UV water purifiers is very simple yet effective. The UV bulb located inside the water purifier can kill all the Viruses, Bacteria, and other microorganisms present in the water but the only problem with UV water purifiers is, they can not remove the dissolved salts present in the water.

Ultrafiltration (UF) Water Purifiers

UF is similar to RO and does not need electricity to operate. These type of water purifiers uses a very fine membrane to kill the bacteria, cysts and other microbes present in the water and functions very efficiently when used with the public supply water.

RO + UV Water Purifier

Some of the Water purification brands employ both the RO and UV technologies in the same water purifier. These types of water purifiers can work with all kinds of water. Always, purchase an RO + UV water purifier that comes with a TDS regulator. Double-check the Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) Levels.

2. Capacity

Most of the water purifiers come with a storage tank to store the purified drinking water. For a small family, a 5-8 liter water purifier can do the job. All the automated water purifiers begin the filtering process as soon as the water levels decline in the storage tank.

3. Electric or Non-Electric

All the Gravity Based Water Purifiers are non-electric but are not as efficient as Electric water purifiers. If you are living in a place where there is a constant electrical outage, you can buy a UF water purifier that functions without electricity. Also, the maintenance cost for these purifiers is very less.

All the RO, UV, and RO + UV Water Purifiers require a power supply to purify the water. If you are an Adventurous Traveller or when you are out of the home, you can make use of Lifestraw portable water purifiers.

4. Maintenance and After-Sale service

Maintenance is important for all kinds of water purifiers. Most of the UV and RO Water purifiers have a Filter Change, UV Bulb change Alarms. These alarms will notify you if there is a need to modify the filters and you have to change them in time, or else the Water purifiers will stop functioning. After all, Fail Saftey mechanism is one of the essential features of an ideal water purifier.

Most of the users are complaining about the poor after-sales support which is a big no when it comes to the water purifier. Always buy the water purifier from reputed brands that offer excellent after-sales support. Some of the trusted water purification brands include HUL Pureit, Kent, Eureka Forbes, and Tata Swatch.

5. Installation, Warranty, and Ratings

Some of the top brands like Kent, HUL, Eureka Forbes, and Tata offer free installation and one year of manufacturer warranty. But some small companies charge an extra amount for installation.

So, make sure you check the installation and warranty details before you buy a water purifier online. We recommend you purchase the best water purifiers at Amazon since they offer on-time delivery and good customer support. Make sure you read customer reviews at Amazon before you purchase the product. A Product with an Average rating of 4 stars is good. Don’t confuse yourself self by reading all the reviews since every product has an imperfection, always consider the average rating.

You stated that UV can kill all the Viruses, Bacteria and other microorganisms present in the water but their dead bodies remain in the water. The dead bodies must be harmful if passed with water. What is the solution ?

    • The dead bacterium is not harmful. Most of the UV water purifiers come with UF combination to ensure the water is completely free from all the pollutants. It is better to go for UV UF Water purifier when the TDS levels in your water are low.

      • Thanks you very much Chaitanya. It helps.
TDS level is around 700-800 ppm.
Is it ok for me to buy RO UF or RO MF ? Are they equally good as RO UV UF?

Also can you comment on water container ? Is stainless steel better than food-grade plastic ?

        • RO Membrane will not only remove Salts and Hard metals it also removes bacteria, virus, and other contaminants. UF, UV or MF are there for extra safety. Any combination is good. Stainless Steel Container costs a little bit more than Food Safe Plastic. ABS Plastic is also good and durable.
