UV Water Purifier (UltraViolet) – Pros and Cons Explained!

Once Upon a time, Water used to be fresh, pure and Drinkable. Due to the different kinds of selfish activities done by us, we pollute Water, Air, and Food.

We can not control the air we breathe, but we can drink completely pure water. Say thanks to Water purifiers!

The Water we get from Wells, rivers, and ponds contains a lot of Bacteria, Virus, Cysts, inorganic elements, Dissolved Salts and Heavy Metals.

Examples of the Heavy Metals in the Water include Mercury, Lead, Cadmium, Arsenic, and thallium. All of these heavy metals have five times more gravity than that of the water.

Even the Tap water we get from the Municipal Corporation contains a lot of Bacteria and other harmful elements. Drinking Pure Water is a must, and the pure water is acknowledged as the world’s first and foremost medicine.

But all these impurities can be removed by the water purifiers. In India, the three most widely used water purifiers are Reverse Osmosis Purifier, UltraViolet Water Purifier, and UltraFiltration Purifier.

In this post, I am going to talk about the Ultraviolet Water Purifier and the Pros and Cons of it.

What is a UV Water Purifier?

The Ultraviolet (UV) Purifier uses the UV Rays to kill the Bacteria, Cysts and other viruses present in the water.

But After Killing them, the Dead Bodies remain in the water. Most of the UV Water Purification systems comes with a Saftey Mechanism, and the power does not leak out when there is no water around the UV Bulb.

When the Water Flows around the UV Bulb, It kills all the Bacteria and Viruses present in the water, and you are ensured to drink the purified and safe water.

These Ultraviolet rays enter through the cells of the bacteria and viruses and destroy them thereby stopping them from reproducing in the water.

The UV Water Purifiers have a simplistic yet powerful purification process and the UV Rays kill 99.99% of the germs present in the water.

The Bulb that is located in the Water Purifier produces the Ultra Violet Light, which kills the Bacteria. A Quartz Glass sleeve is placed around the Bulb, which blocks Direct contact with the water.

The UV Water Purifier requires electricity to operate, and it uses the same amount of power that is utilized by a 40 Watt Bulb.

You can also connect your UV Water purifier to a UPS or inverter if there is a power Outage.

RO Water Purifier vs UV Water Purifier

The UV Water Purifier uses Ultraviolet rays whereas the Reverse Osmosis Purifier uses membranes to purify the water. Both of them employ a very different process to clean the water.

As I mentioned earlier, the UV Purifier only kills the Bacteria and cysts present in the water but their bodies remain in the water, and separate filters are required to remove them.

But In RO Purifier, All the Bacteria and Viruses are Killed and removed from the water.

The UV and UF Purifiers can not remove the Dissolved Salts present in the Water.

The water which contains more TDS level is not suitable for Drinking. The Reverse Osmosis purifiers can remove all the Dissolved salts present in the Water, which is not possible in the UV purifier.

If you are not sure about the TDS levels found in the Water, You can opt for the RO Water Purifier that comes with a TDS Controller or Mineralizer.

Merits of using Ultraviolet Water Purifiers

  • Ultraviolet radiation destroys up to 99.99% of harmful bacteria and viruses in the water without adding any chemicals. Otherwise, people use disinfectants like chlorine to kill these microorganisms.
  • The absence of chemicals like chlorine ensures that water taste does not change.
  • Ultraviolet water purification is the most effective way to kill microorganisms without boiling the water.
  • This water purification method requires little energy to function. A UV water purifier does not consume more power than what a 60W bulb does.
  • Maintaining UV water purifier is easy. You can change the UV bulb annually and forget about it as the appliance goes on with its job of purifying water.
  • UV water purifiers are environmentally friendly.
  • The best aspect of UV water purifiers is that they are compatible with water purification procedures, like Reverse Osmosis, Ultrafiltration, etc.
  • UV water purifiers never waste any water as the RO water purifiers do.

We have discussed the advantages of UV water purifiers. Here are some demerits of this purification method that are worth considering.

Drawbacks of Using Ultraviolet water purifiers

  • Though UV water purifiers eliminate bacterial and viral contamination, they are ineffective when it comes to removing heavy salt impurities like chlorine, and other metals like arsenic, antimony, lead, etc.
  • UV water purifiers cannot eliminate volatile organic compounds. Hence, they cannot improve the taste of source water.
  • UV water purifiers work on electricity. If there is no power supply, these water purifiers are useless.
  • The significant disadvantage of UV light is that you cannot turn it off. You have to switch off the machine entirely. Besides, the UV light is invisible. Hence, you might not know whether the device is performing correctly or not. Therefore, these water purifiers come with UV fail alarms to indicate that the appliance is out of order.
  • Ultraviolet water purifiers kill the microorganisms but do not remove their dead bodies. Hence, these machines require an additional filter layer to get rid of these contaminants.

Final Words

Ultraviolet water purifiers are generally inexpensive and easy to set up. Changing the UV bulb is also not an issue at all. It does not require the services of a technician.

Hence, these water purifiers have become popular all over India, especially in cities like Mumbai, where the source water is soft and does not contain harsh chemicals or TDS. The only contaminant such water accumulates is bacteria and viruses on the way from the source to the destination through pipes.

UV water purifiers are generally used as supplementary purification devices in areas having TDS and other impurities. They work in combination with other filtration procedures like RO water purifiers.

If the TDS levels in the water source is below 400ppm, you can choose the UV Water Filter.

  1. We get river water directly delivered to my house without filtered. Some times the TDS is below 400 & some times above 600. In summer days to maintain water supply The town panchayat supplies mixed water (Well & River) that time the TDS is above 600 otherwise below 400 in other months. Considering this I have opted for Aquaguard NRich UV & UF water purifier. The town panchayat is installing water filter to supply filtered water to each & every home but will it work efficiently or no don’t know. I don’t want RO because there is lots of water wastage. Please help me out.

    • 400 to 600ppm TDS range is acceptable and Good. As the town Panchayat already provides you filtered water, there is no need for an RO. your UV UF model is good enough. Don’t worry.

  2. Being given to understand that life of an UV lamp is 8000 continuous burning hours. We are using Nova model filter of Ureka Fobes and we use only for one hour every day rest of the time power supply to filter is Off. Then how do I calculate the life of it’s UV lamp

  3. I have recently installed Ao Smith Z1 uv filter. My incoming water to purifier is 220ppm and water after filteration is also showing same ppm .. is it safe

    • The TDS in your water source is excellent. NO need to worry. AO Smith Z1 is an UV Water Purifier and it does not remove any salts from the water hence the TDS value will be same. Only RO water purifiers remove TDS from the water an such purifiers should be used when the TDS levels in the water is high.

    • No need to clean the UV bulb. All the water purifiers these days have an alarm. You can change the UV bulb when required.

    • Yeah UV Bulbs work for really long time more than a year. You will get a notification if the Bulb stops working. The UF filters and any other pre-filters will last for an year.

  6. The water source in my home is from borewell and TDS is 916. I was using Kent Prime TC for last five years. During the whole period my daughter’s health remained great concern for us. She has developed stomach related problems. She is on continuous homeopathic medicine. She complains acidity, stomach pain etc on regular basis. Is it due to continuos RO water consumption?
    If yes, I wish to switch to UV UF purifier. Now, kindly suggest me if I use UV UF along with Iron remover or Heavy Metal Remover, can it control high TDS? If yes, how much?

  7. Bmc water tds is 62 which is coming in my home but after installing aqua dolphin non ro (UV Uf) its tds level gone to 72. I knw its within limit but tds level got increased… What to do now

    • TDS levels are not an exact number and there will be a slight variation every time you check the TDS in your water source. Anything below 300ppm is fine. No need to worry.
