HEPA Air Purifier vs Ionizer – Which is Better?

|

|

It is natural for you to do research when you wish to purchase an air purifier. You will come across terms like HEPA Purifier, Ionizer, and so on. It is crucial to know the difference between these types of air purifiers.

Understand that both these air purifiers clean the air of impurities, but in different ways. Let us see the difference between the two.

HEPA Purifier has filters whereas Ionizers do not have them

To understand the difference between these two air purifiers, you should know how these filters work. The HEPA air purifier sucks the indoor air into the device through a filter that traps airborne contaminants. It then releases the pure air back into the room.

HEPA Filter

This process works continuously and keeps the place free from pollutants. The HEPA air purifier is also capable of trapping cigarette smoke.

The Ionizer works differently. It sends our electrically charged ions into the atmosphere. These ions bond with the contaminants and become heavy.

Therefore, the pollutants fall to the floor. Some of the ionisers have a collection plate to collect these heavy ionised contaminants. There is a disadvantage with the ionisers in the sense that there are chances of the impurities contaminating the room again.

The HEPA air purifiers score over the ionisers on this score.

Ionizers can cater to a larger area as compared to the HEPA filters

Ionizer

The HEPA air purifiers have filters. Hence, they have limitations as far as area coverage is concerned. Ionizers do not have screens.

These purifiers are perfect for offices and broad business areas. The biggest HEPA filter, Rabbit Air MinusA2 can purify air over an area of 700 sq ft. On the other hand, the ionisers like Living Fresh Sky1057 can purify regions as large as 3500 sq ft.

As far as area coverage is concerned, the ionisers are better than the HEPA air purifiers.

Maintenance costs vs Initial Cost

The HEPA air purifier works on advanced technology. Hence, you can expect these purifiers to cost more than the ionisers. HEPA air purifiers need regular maintenance as it entails changing of the filters on an annual basis.

The ionisers have collection plates for collecting the contaminants. Cleaning them is enough. Hence, they do not incur maintenance costs. The collection plates are washable and reusable.

Thus, as far as initial costs are concerned, the ionisers are cheaper. They are better than the HEPA air purifiers regarding maintenance costs.

HEPA air purifiers come in various styles and designs

The advantage of using HEPA air purifiers is that you can find products to suit your décor. You have wall mountable HEPA air purifiers. Hence, you can place them anywhere in the room.

On the other hand, the ionisers are thin vertical units that you put in the corner of the rooms. The new ionisers are fashionable to look at, but they cannot match the HEPA air purifiers in their looks.

Inference

We have just seen the comparison between HEPA air purifiers and ionisers. One can state that the HEPA air purifiers are better than the ionisers as far as performance is concerned. Naturally, you have to incur a higher cost if you require an excellent air purifier.
