Anti corrosion Technology in Water Heaters

Corrosion and rust formation can lead to water tank leakages. In addition, it can reduce the water heater’s lifespan. Besides, the dangers of electric shocks increase. Therefore, every water heater manufacturer uses anti-corrosion technology when designing water tanks.

The Need For Anti-corrosion Technology

All water heaters have some water in the tank at all times. Depending on the geyser’s storage capacity, the storage water heaters contain more water. The instant heaters have less water. But, people never leave the geyser tank empty at any time. So, constant contact with water can result in corrosion.

Hence, the inner surface of the water tank is coated with anti-corrosive substances to prevent corrosion, even when the water tank contains hot water. Besides, the heating element also requires protection from corrosion, carbonization, and oxidation.

The anti-corrosion technology differs from one manufacturer to the other. Let us explore the different anti-corrosion technologies in use in geysers in India.

Different Anti-corrosion Technologies

1. Porcelain Enamel Coating

Porcelain enamel coating can resist corrosion and prevent the inner surface of the storage water tank from rusting. Venus geysers use dry porcelain enameling at high temperatures (approximately 850 degrees Celsius) to produce a vitreous enamel layer. The porcelain coating protects the water tank from corrosion. Various certifying organizations like BIS, DIN, UL, and IEC approve of this European technology.

2. Blue Diamond Glass Coating

AO Smith water heaters offer Blue Diamond Glass lined water storage tanks to protect them against corrosion and hard water. Blue Diamond glass is a superior and revolutionary glass formula that completely fuses with the inner surface of the water storage tank. The exciting feature is that the formula expands and contracts accordingly without cracking as the water cools and heats. Glass does not rust. Hence, there is no risk of corrosion to the water tanks. No rust means cleaner and purer hot water.

3. Blue Sapphire Enamel Coating

Blue Sapphire enamel is similar to Blue Diamond Glass technology. It provides excellent resistance to corrosion by fusing with the inner walls of the stainless steel water tank. Usha storage water heaters offer Blue Sapphire Enamel coating technology to prevent corrosion and extend their life span. Usha water heaters extend the same technology to the heating elements, preventing calcification and oxidation, making them last longer, and saving power.

4. Glassline Coating

Bajaj water heaters come equipped with Titanium Armor technology, where the inner surface of the storage tank is coated with high-grade glass to prevent the tank from rusting. This corrosion-resistant technology enhances the water storage tank’s lifespan and makes the geyser durable. Bajaj water heaters also feature a single-line welded outer body with IPX4 waterproof technology to protect them from corrosion and water splashes. Besides, these heaters feature a magnesium anode rod that prevents the heating element from rusting. The latest Orient and Reconnect storage water heaters offer Glassline coating technology to protect the water tank from corrosion.

5. Titanium Enamel Coating

Racold water heater models use Titanium Plus technology to protect the water tank’s inner surface from corrosion. These storage water heater tanks have a titanium enamel coating that resists corrosion and pressure. Hence, these storage geysers are durable and can withstand water at high pressure. In addition, the inner sides of the storage water tanks are coated with SPHP (Super Polymer High Performance) coating to prevent corrosion due to hard water.

6. Nano Coating with single weld line

The latest Crompton Greaves storage water heaters have nano polymer coated water storage tanks to protect against corrosion. Besides, these water heaters have a single welded line tank that minimizes water leakage by 66%. The Crompton Greaves geysers also feature nickel-coated copper heating element that resists salt and corrosive particles. In addition, some Crompton Greaves models feature Incoloy glass coating on the heating element to prevent rust formation.

7. Feroglas Technology with single weld line

Havells geysers use proprietary technology to equip their water heaters with dry powder Feroglas coated inner containers. This technology involves reinforcing the inner sides of the water tank with ultra-thick, super cold rolled steel plates. This arrangement provides superior corrosion resistance and anti-rust properties to enhance the water storage tank’s lifespan. In addition, Havells water heater tanks are made from rolled steel plated with a single weld. Hence, they last longer than other inner container designs. Besides, these water tanks can withstand water pressure up to 8 bars, making them ideal for high-rise apartments.

Havells models like Instanio, Adonia, Magnatron, Monza, Puro, Bianca, and Troica use Feroglas technology to protect the storage tanks from corrosion.

8. Incoloy 800 Glass Coating

The heating element is also in constant exposure to water. Therefore, it is subject to oxidation and carbonization, especially at high temperatures. Havells geysers feature Incoloy 800 glass coated heating element to protect against erosion, corrosion, and hard water conditions to prevent salt layer formation on its surface. Thus, it extends the heating element’s lifespan and ensures power savings. Almost all Havells geysers feature Incoloy 800 glass-coated heating element.

9. SS 304 Stainless Steel

Traditionally, storage water heater tanks are made from high-grade SS 304 Stainless Steel. It prevents corrosion and lasts long. Besides, it can withstand different types of inlet water, including hard water. Brands like Kelvinator, BPL, Bajaj, Orient, etc., offer SS 304 stainless steel water tanks.

The Advantages of Glass enameled water tanks

Storage water heater tanks are subject to corrosion. We have discussed nine technologies various water heater manufacturers use to protect their water tanks and heating elements. Here are the advantages of glass-enameled water tanks for geysers.

  • These coatings make the geysers suitable for all kinds of water, including hard water with high TDS content.
  • The protective layer does not allow scaling or dirt deposits on the inner surface of the water tank.
  • Glass and porcelain are good conductors of heat. Hence, the water remains hot for extended periods inside the tank.
  • Glass enamel provides resistance to acids and alkalis.
  • The single weld lining ensures against seepage and leakage. Thus, it protects against accidental shocks.
  • Cleaning the water tanks becomes easier because the glass lining keeps them smooth.
  • Various international qualifying standards approve glass and porcelain-enameled water storage tanks for geysers.
  • These protection technologies extend the geyser’s lifespan and provide complete value for money.

Wrap up

Water storage tanks in geysers can get corroded due to constant exposure to water. Protective technology like porcelain or glass enameled coating can help prevent corrosion and damage due to rust formation. Thus, it extends the appliance’s lifespan considerably.
